Teddy Bear Day

We had a FABULOUS day today - we had  a teddy bear day.  Here are some photos and videos to show you a little of what we got up to!

We all brought our teddies to school - we read them our big book called "The Teddy Bear's Picnic" - our teddies LOVED listening to us read!

We helped our teddies do the actions to our poem of the week.  Some of our teddies found it a bit hard, but we helped them.

We made teddy bear biscuits...

AND we had our very own teddy bears' picnic!

Thank you to those of you who took up the opportunity to come in for 'Meet the Teacher' the other night. Several of you asked about ways to get involved and to stay in touch. Well - did you see the post in the TNB? Have a read for some great ideas about how you can stay in touch...

Have you been to visit your child's class or personal blog? Each class at Russell Street makes weekly or even daily posts on their Blog. Links to each classes blog can be found on both the TNB and School Website. Students and teachers share important news and events and you through moving and still images, sounds and words. There are links to notices and home learning activities. We are very proud of our class Blogs with many receiving national recognition as the best in the country. I'm sure you will find these sites a valuable tool in staying informed and involved. We actively encourage parent participation in the Blog's through commenting. Children love to get feedback and this spurs them on to creating even more powerful learning. If you are unsure about commenting feel free to see James in the office or see your child's teacher.

How else can I be informed and involved?  We have a variety of ways of communicating at Russell Street to meet the various needs of a busy school and community. Below are some of the ways we communicate and their purpose.

The TNB is our online newsletter and is updated almost daily with information relating to organization and celebrating success.  Subscribing to a RSS feed can keep you up to date with changes. Each week we send a text to remind families to check online.

The Russell Street School website is a store of information containing BOT reports, school policies, history, staff profiles etc. A new post linked to school learning or strategic priorities may be made weekly or fortnightly. The school website is also a portal to any online spaces students and our community may need to go to regularly.

The RSS Community Calendar linked on the TNB and school website has upcoming events for each term. We add these events as times, venues, participants and activities are confirmed.

We stream our assemblies live. If you are unable to attend an assembly of your child, or have family living elsewhere in the world, you or they can tune in live or see the recorded video by clicking the assembly link on the school website.

Twitter text reminders such as ... sausage sizzle money due, swimming sports tomorrow ... can be received on any telecom or vodafone mobile phone. Simply TXT: follow Russell_Street, to 8987 for updates. This has no cost and can be unsubscribed from at a later date.

Keep an eye out for chalk notices on the footpath, whiteboards and paper notices in your children's bags. Paper notices are usually only sent home when it is vital that information gets through to all of our community.

We highly value face to face meetings and informal chats, planning three formal meetings a year to focus on your child's progress and development. Developing a personal relationship with families is a high priority for all staff and we look forward to seeing you each day.

After morning tea, we come inside and read from our book boxes.  We know that if we want to get better at our reading, we need to read, read, read!

Teddy Bear's Picnic

This week we are reading a big book about teddy bears AND we have a poem about teddy bears. We have decided to bring our teddy bears to school for a teddy bears picnic! Could your child please bring their favourite teddy bear to school on Thursday AND Friday? On Thursday, we will be doing lots of talking about our teddy bears for statistics and on Friday we will have our own teddy bears picnic!

Catch Me If You Can

Cruze said that we were learning how to run. Kyle and Maia told us that we need to pump our arms. Michael and Ollie told us that our legs have to go up and down to make us run. Eric said that our eyes have to look where we are going when we run. Here is a video of us running at Catch Me If You Can... Here is a game we played to help us practise our running. We had to get the balls back in the bucket and Sha had to try to get them all out of the bucket!

Korero Mai RSS Style 2013 - Nga Tae / The Colours

Check out this AMAZING video that Rosie (from Tekau Ma Rua Terabytes) made! It is FANTASTIC! We have started to learn our colours in Maori - this will really help us!

Mrs Wishy Washy's Tub

Last week, our Big Book was called Mrs Wishy Washy's Tub.  On Friday, we made our own Mrs Wishy Washy and made all sorts of different animals for her tub.  Poor Mrs Wishy Washy - this time she has some alligators to wash too!  Wishy-washy Wishy-washy!

Independent Reading

Here are just some of the kids today at reading!  When the children had finished illustrating their poem, they practised writing their words.  Some of the other kids did this too, but rubbed them out before we could take a photo!

Thank You!

Catch Me If You Can

Here we are at our very first session with Sha! Today we were exploring 'walking.' How do we walk and what do our bodies do? We know that our arms move by our side, our eyes need to look where we are going and our shoulders are back.

Swimming & Catch Me If You Can

This week we are starting both Swimming and Catch Me If You Can.

Our swimming days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday - please ensure that your child brings their togs and towel.  All clothing needs to be named.

Catch Me If You Can is our sports programme where children learn basic movement and ball skills.  This term, our days are Monday and Tuesday (even weeks) and Tuesday (odd weeks).  Children need to wear sports shoes on these days.

Watch this space to see our learning in action!

Our Buddies

We are really excited to have our buddies in the class next door to us. They are big Year 4's and are looking forward to working with us too. On Tuesday, we had a chance to talk together so we could get to know them a little bit and we read our very first book of the year to them. Here are our buddies...

In the Morning...

When we come to school in the morning we need to...
* put our book bag in the box
* put our brain food on the tray
* write in the rainbow writing book
* find our photo and write our name by it on the whiteboard

How did you get on this morning? Is there anything you need to remember tomorrow?

Our First Day at School

I am just SO proud of the children in the iBots! What a wonderful day we had today as we began to get to know each other and started our learning journey together. Here are the children introducing themselves to you... where will they be after 6 years at Russell Street School?  Another 2 years at Intermediate?  Another 5 at High School?  What an exciting adventure to be on!
